Air Force transcends its propaganda purpose. It's well crafted all the
way around, from the acting to the writing to the aerial fighting to James
Wong Howe's painstakingly striking cinematography. A B-17 takes off from
San Francisco in December of 1941 headed for Hawaii only to witness the
Pearl Harbor attack from above, so it lands and takes off to thwart an
oncoming attack. Reassigned to Manila, the crew (which includes the always
cynical John Garfield, Gig Young, Arthur Kennedy, George Tobias, and Harry
Carey) is thrust into the thick of battle. Incidentally, Hawks enlisted
William Faulkner to rewrite a death scene that resulted in a sublime sense
of honor.

Typical Naval Aviation at its Nostalgic Best
- Warner Brothers 1941 "Dive Bomber" was one of the best aviation films
of its day and the credit belongs not so much to director Michael Curtiz
as it does to Frank Wead, who wrote the screenplay with Robert Buckner
from his original story. "Spig" Wead had been a Commander in the U.S. Navy,
credited with starting the Navy's flying program until he was partially
crippled in an accident at home. Wead's story was told in John Ford's 1957
"The Wings of Eagles" with John Wayne playing the part. Errol Flynn stars
as Dr. Doug Lee, who decides to devote himself to aviation medicine
after an injured pilot dies during surgery. Working with test pilot
Joe Blake (Fred MacMurray), Lee tries to find a solution to what is then
called "Aviation Sickness." The best sequences in the film take place in
the air, as they should since the film was made with the assistance of
the Navy, although some credit needs to be given to the first rate photography
as well. The airplanes and the formation flying over North Island Naval
Air Station are a tribute to Naval Aviation, and will bring back many lost
memories.

Johnson fiction movie, "Men of the Fighting Lady"), which was filmed during
actual combat on the Aircraft Carrier Enterprise--the original "Big E"--whose
combat record was very impressive. The shots of carrier deck action, landings,
wing camera shots of enemies being shot down and ground installations being
bombarded and strafed were beautiful and dramatic, and recorded actual
combat with real people being killed.

one such argument Scott insults a Japanese diplomat and is sent to a desk
job in Panama. But a year later he is aboard a new carrier, the USS Saratoga
an after Pearl Harbor he is the Operations Officer on the USS Yorktown
at the Battle of Midway, and ends up commanding his own flattop. At the
Battle of Okinawa, his ship is badly damaged by a kamikaze attack, but
refuses to abandon his ship. The stars of "Task Force" are Cooper and the
Technicolor combat footage of World War II included in the film, which
gave it an authenticity beyond most war films.

A movie version of the insight into the world
of the test pilot. Among the planes used in this movie were the Army's
huge new bombers, which were nicknamed "Flying Fortresses", which were,
in 1938, probably the most powerful war planes on earth. The scenes in
which they appear were shot at March Field, California with co-operation
with the Army. This picture made the most out of a test pilot's daredevil
life and the spectre of death which hung over one pilot (Clark Gable, natch),
his wife (Myrna Loy) and his mechanic (Spencer Tracy). TEST PILOT got its
title from a book written by one Jimmy Collins who was one of the ablest
of test pilots during the thirties. In 1938, there were approximately 100
test pilots in the US, most being between the ages of 20 and 30. They earned
big money and lived high and hard - if not long! One of the
15 top grossing films of 1938, it was nominated for Best Picture at the
Venice Film Festival.

Set during World War II April 18, 1942 - the
Doolittle raid over Japan - the first US raid on Japan after Pearl
Harbor. One purpose of it was to create a strong psychological impact on
the Japanese who used to believe their territory was safe from such
an attack (a parallel can be drawn here with what happened in New
York on September 11, 2001). Another purpose was to boost the morale of
Americans, both that of the civil population and of the military. This
dual aim was fully reached.Like the book it's faithfully based on, the
film is divided in 3 main parts :
1) the training for the raid or how to learn on land to get a heavy B-25
to take off from a carrier knowing you only have one chance to do it :
the day of the mission,
2) the bombing raid itself involving 16 planes (if I remember right), and
3) the survival story : how to get back home after crashing in hostile
territory : mainland China occupied by Japanese forces (knowing it was
impossible to fly back to the carrier and that you couldn't probably have
landed on it with a heavy plane like a B-25).

This was Director John Ford's tribute to those
"naval aviators in leather skull caps"- he did this well, not focusing
on any particular person or event.This is a Navy story about those naval
aviators and maintenance personnel who helped in the advancement of naval
aviation to what it is today, adding of course a mixture of competition
provided by the navy wives and their only rival- the United States Navy.
"Spig" Wead had been a Commander in the U.S. Navy, credited with starting
the Navy's flying program until he was partially crippled in an accident
at home. Wead's story was told in John Ford's 1957 "The Wings of Eagles"
with John Wayne playing the part.
This film will bring tears and some fond memories to those
pioneer naval aviation wives who are still around and had experienced it
all- tough, hardened gals them all. They can tell you many things about
the sugar white sands of Santa Rosa Island; the babies that died in the
1919 influenza rage; the open-air jalopy rides down old Warrington Road
andCoronado Avenue; the large screened front porches in Warrington and
Long Beach; the large flying boats skimming across Pensacola and San Diego
bays; meeting their husbands upon their return landing in the old fighters
and torpedo planes at NAS San Diego; followed by the many naval parties
at Mustin Beach and North Island officers' clubs; and, getting by
with just a Lieutenant's salary with flying pay attached to make ends meet.
John Ford did the movie as a tribute to Spig Wead a fellow
naval friend and screenwriter.
