Battlefield: The Battle
of Midway (1942) .
ASIN/6304493819
Pearl Harbor to Midway were decisive periods
in WW2 for the aircraft carrier. John Ford's 1942 short documentary on
the Battle of Midway. The story is that President Franklin Roosevelt insisted
that this documentary about the pivotal World War II battle in the Pacific
be made for the mothers of America. In this battle the torpedo squadrons
from three American aircraft carriers were all shot down by the Japanese,
without ever having one torpedo hit anything and only one man surviving.
In an incredibly lucky twist of fate, the torpedo planes had forced the
Zeroes providing air cover for the Japanese carriers down on the deck,
giving the American dive bombers a clear shot at their targets. John Ford
directed this 20 minute documentary, which is narrated by Donald Crisp
with Henry Fonda and Jane Darwell providing dialogue voices. Ford happened
to be on hand with a crew of naval photographers and was wounded during
the battle. The film covers the attack on Midway, including some aerial
footage, the search for survivors, and aftermath of the battle. Edited
in secret, the film was released just days after its completion.

National Geographic Video
- The Battle For Midway. ASIN/B00004SCA6
The man who found the Titanic, Dr. Robert
Ballard, took on the greatest technical challenge of his career when he
traveled to the Pacific waters off Midway Island, site of a critical turning
point of World War II, in search of the sunken aircraft carrier U.S.S.
Yorktown. This documentary not only details Ballard's challenge in finding
the Yorktown, which rests three miles below the surface, a mile deeper
than the Titanic, but also provides an intelligent and gripping narrative
of the Battle of Midway, in which four Japanese carriers were also
sent to the bottom in a furious day of fighting that turned the tide of
the war in the Pacific. On the expedition with Ballard are four veterans,
two Japanese and two Americans, who had been involved in the decisive 1942
battle, and who are at times overwhelmed by emotion as Ballard looks for
their old ships. The dogged search for a Japanese carrier is fruitless,
but finally Ballard finds a debris field that leads him to the Yorktown.
Ballard's remarkable underwater cameras scan the great carrier, which rests
upright on the ocean floor, its antiaircraft guns still pointed skyward
as if to ward off yet another furious Japanese attack.

V Is For Victory - America
Goes To War - Pearl Harbour To Midway.
ASIN/B00004CWLF
Pearl Harbor to Midway" is the first volume
in the ten volume "V for Victory" series. Hosted by noted journalists Eric
Sevareid and Edwin Newman, this series explores World War II using original
newsreel stories. Volume I covers how the United States was finally plunged
into the war following the daring dawn attack by Japan on Pearl Harbor.
The focus is on the Japanese advances across the South Pacific, including
the fall of the Philippines. However, the episode does end with the pivotal
battle of Midway, which marked the end of Japan's eastward expansion and
the beginning of the American counterattack (which is the subject of Volume
II). The newsreel footage is the chief strength of this series, which does
attempt to provide the viewer with an idea of how the war was being portrayed
back home.

Midway. Starring Charlton
Heston, Henry Fonda, et al. (1976). ASIN/6300181472
Six months after the Japanese destroyed the
U.S. Pacific fleet at Pearl Harbor, the Americans discovered the Japanese
were planning to seize the Naval base at Midway Island--a perfect staging
point for invading Hawaii or the mainland. Outnumbered four to one, the
Americans won a surprise victory and shattered the backbone of the Japanese
Imperial Navy. This 1976 film feels more like a history lesson than a drama,
but World War II buffs will appreciate the attention to historical fact
(especially the way in which fate and a few bad decisions turned the tide),
as well as the generous use of actual battle footage. The all-star cast
includes Robert Mitchum, James Coburn, and Cliff Robertson in cameos and
a whole slew of familiar TV faces in supporting roles.

Task Force (1949) -- Gary
Cooper, Jane Wyatt;. (1949). ASIN/6302923026
Gary Cooper plays Admiral Jonathan L. Scott
in this 1949 film directed by Delmer Daves, that proved to be one of the
most popular films of the late 1940s. About to retire, Scott recalls how
he and other Navy Men had argued the importance of aircraft carriers. During
one such argument Scott insults a Japanese diplomat and is sent to a desk
job in Panama. But a year later he is aboard a new carrier, the USS Saratoga
an after Pearl Harbor he is the Operations Officer on the USS Yorktown
at the Battle of Midway, and ends up commanding his own flattop. At the
Battle of Okinawa, his ship is badly damaged by a kamikaze attack, but
refuses to abandon his ship. The stars of "Task Force" are Cooper and the
Technicolor combat footage of World War II included in the film, which
gave it an authenticity beyond most war films.
