Weapons at War - Naval
Aviation. History Channel. ASIN/0767021185
Extremely well researched history of naval
aviation. The documentary starts off appropriately with Orville & Wright
and the reluctance of the US Congress in 1910 to get into the aviation
business. Then it chronologically looks at th evarious battles. The first
big battle at Coral Sea in May 1942 showed that airpower was absolutely
critical in naval operations. The meat of the film is the fighting aircraft.
This one didn't disappoint. Good descriptions of the planes and their strengths
and weaknesses, often from actual former pilots. The producers chose the
F9F Panther to introduce the carrier jet age. The video ends with the F-14
TomCat.

Fighting Lady (1944).
ASIN/B00005B1YF
Made at the height of World War II and considered
one of the best documentaries of that time, this film records the life
of the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown from launching in 1943 through to
the Pacific. One of three morale-boosting government documentaries directed
by Lieutenant Colonel William Wyler (the others were The Memphis Belle
and Thunderbolt). The documentary follows the exploits of an aircraft carrier,
its crew, and the planes transported on its deck - including colour footage
of a suicide attack by Kamikaze pilots. It received the Academy Award for
Best Documentary 1944.
This documentary which was filmed during actual combat
on the Aircraft Carrier Enterprise--the original "Big E"--whose combat
record was very impressive. The shots of carrier deck action, landings,
wing camera shots of enemies being shot down and ground installations being
bombarded and strafed were beautiful and dramatic, and recorded actual
combat with real people being killed.

U.S. News & World Report:
Carrier Victory (1992) ASIN/6302796741
America fights back with Carrier Victory.
Through spectacular full-colour footage and close-up personal accounts,
top flight pilots and sailors relate what it waas like to live, operate
and fight aboard these floating fortresses. The carrier was first mastered
by the Japanese in the devastating raid on Pearl Harbor. Then a shocked
American nation fought back with carrier advances--industrial and technological
improvements that bested the enemy at their own game. The narration does
a good job of telling the story of how American carrier task forces carried
the war across the sea to Japan's doorstep, and the real star of the production
is the engrossing colour footage of flaming aerial combat over the beautiful
blue Pacific.

Battlefield: The Battle
of Midway (1942) .
ASIN/6304493819
Pearl Harbor to Midway were decisive periods
in WW2 for the aircraft carrier. John Ford's 1942 short documentary on
the Battle of Midway. The story is that President Franklin Roosevelt insisted
that this documentary about the pivotal World War II battle in the Pacific
be made for the mothers of America. In this battle the torpedo squadrons
from three American aircraft carriers were all shot down by the Japanese,
without ever having one torpedo hit anything and only one man surviving.
In an incredibly lucky twist of fate, the torpedo planes had forced the
Zeroes providing air cover for the Japanese carriers down on the deck,
giving the American dive bombers a clear shot at their targets. John Ford
directed this 20 minute documentary, which is narrated by Donald Crisp
with Henry Fonda and Jane Darwell providing dialogue voices. Ford happened
to be on hand with a crew of naval photographers and was wounded during
the battle. The film covers the attack on Midway, including some aerial
footage, the search for survivors, and aftermath of the battle. Edited
in secret, the film was released just days after its completion.

Men of the Fighting Lady
. Starring Walter Pidgeon and Van Johnson (1954). ASIN/6302224454
This story centers on Naval Aviation during
the Korean War. Taken from stories originally published in "The Saturday
Evening Post," this is an engrossing and moving story with acting
that is first class. The tale of Ensign Ken Shechter, based on "The Case
of the Blind Pilot," is knuckle-biting to say the least. Far more captivating
and emotionally taxing than "Top Gun," "Men of the Fighting Lady" must
surely be ranked among the great war films.

Sterling Hayden acts the part of a Navy fighter
squadron commander. Richard Carlson, as his executive officer, was effective
as the second-in-command. The mission: to kill Japs and win the war. A
great deal of the splendid photography came from the excellent World War
II documentary film, "The Fighting Lady" (not to be confused with the Van
Johnson fiction movie, "Men of the Fighting Lady"), which was filmed during
actual combat on the Aircraft Carrier Enterprise--the original "Big E"--whose
combat record was very impressive. The shots of carrier deck action, landings,
wing camera shots of enemies being shot down and ground installations being

Task Force (1949) -- Gary
Cooper, Jane Wyatt;. (1949). ASIN/6302923026
Gary Cooper plays Admiral Jonathan L. Scott
in this 1949 film directed by Delmer Daves, that proved to be one of the
most popular films of the late 1940s. About to retire, Scott recalls how
he and other Navy Men had argued the importance of aircraft carriers. During
one such argument Scott insults a Japanese diplomat and is sent to a desk
job in Panama. But a year later he is aboard a new carrier, the USS Saratoga
an after Pearl Harbor he is the Operations Officer on the USS Yorktown
at the Battle of Midway, and ends up commanding his own flattop. At the
Battle of Okinawa, his ship is badly damaged by a kamikaze attack, but
refuses to abandon his ship. The stars of "Task Force" are Cooper and the
Technicolor combat footage of World War II included in the film, which
gave it an authenticity beyond most war films.

The Big Aircraft Carrier
(1995) ASIN/6304267053
This kid's-eye tour of the largest ship in
the U.S. Navy invites the viewer into a small airplane on land, takes them
on a brief flight, through a landing on the USS Nimitz and through takeoff
again. Along the way, there's a tour of the ship--the largest afloat on
earth--from hospital to barbershop to library. Viewers get to watch future
pilots go through water-survival training, parachute-landing practice,
and escape from a dunker--a cage that simulates a helicopter crashed into
the water. Much of the 40-minute tour is ideal for kids, such as the fact
that the naval personnel wear different-colored shirts that identify their
jobs--yellow shirts direct the planes, purple shirts refuel, etc. The video
simplifies more difficult information by comparing it to what kids know:
the aircraft carrier weighs more than 15,000 school buses. While
most of the aircraft carrier's 6,000 residents appear to be male, both
a male pilot and a female pilot talk about their job on camera, giving
girls a nice incentive to watch.
