Detailed
reference work of the Royal Navy Aircraft Serials and Units 1911-1919.
Probably the most ambitious project of its nature ever attempted, this
work provides complete or near complete histories of over 15,000 aircraft
flown by the Royal Naval Air Service from 1911 and by successor units of
the Royal Air Force from 1 April 1918 until the end of 1919. It also lists
their squadrons, units and bases. There are details of numerous attempts
by coastal aircraft to bomb U-boats around the coast of Britain, and of
land-based naval aircraft making hazardous night flights to help stem the
Zeppelin menace. The many individual incidents include Major Barker's dramatic
fight in October 1918 when, despite his Sopwith Snipe being riddled with
bullets as he came down, he managed to account for four enemy aircraft
before making a crash landing from which he and his aircraft survived,
for which unique exploit he was awarded a well merited Victoria Cross.

Flown
from mid-1917 by the Royal Flying Corps, the Royal Naval Air Service and
the later the Royal Air Force, the Sopwith Camel was one of the foremost
Allied fighters during the latter part of the first World War. With hundreds
of victories to its credit, it was flown by many famous names of the period.
Developed from the Sopwith Pup, it was to serve with twenty front line
squadrons on the Western Front and in Italy, and was still in full service
at the Armistice. Appendices include comprehensive details of the squadrons
and other units with which the Camel served, as well as its use by other
air forces, and a detailed index contains the names of nearly 3,000 Camel
pilots.

In
many ways, the Sopwith Camel and the S.E.5 could be regarded as the First
World War equivalents of the Spitfire and Hurricane. The S.E.5 originated
in the second half of 1916, to meet the requirement for a faster and more
manoeuvrable single-seat fighter. Designed by the Royal Aircraft Factory
at Farnborough, it went into large scale production. Details of the service
of the S.E.5 and S.E.5A are backed by extensive tables of individual histories
including the men who flew the type, their victories and losses. Three
pages of general arrangement drawings, a cut-away drawing and eight pages
of colour drawings showing various markings carried by the type should
be useful to modellers.

A companion
work to 'The Squadrons of the Fleet Air Arm', this is the first comprehensive
listing ever undertaken of the aircraft flown by the Royal Navy in the
Second World War. Many years of research have gone into compiling this
work, which reveals just how varied and widespread were the activities
of the Fleet Air Arm at its highest strength. The entries are on similar
lines to those in 'Royal Navy Aircraft Serials and Units 1911 to 1919'.
As with the earlier work, the tables are not just a simple listing of serial
numbers and squadrons, but include known dates of service with units, code
markings and also a vast amount of other information on various types of
incident such as accidents, air combat victories and U-boat attacks. Details
of all known wartime naval aircraft fatalities and prisoners of war are
given. The whole work runs to 512 pages, with 200 photographs and a comprehensive
index to around 8,000 names of people of varied ranks included in the lists,
many of whom were from Commonwealth navies.

Back
in the dark days of 1938, the British Government under Prime Minister Neville
Chamberlain at last woke up to the inevitability of conflict with Germany
and the need to build up very rapidly a Royal Air Force which would stand
a chance of dealing with the situation. The British aircraft industry
was, not surprisingly, quite unable to cope with the high volume output
suddenly and belatedly demanded of it, and it was therefore decided that
aircraft of certain categories should be procured in the United States
of America. To carry out this plan, the British Purchasing Commission was
armed; it left for Washington in April 1938, complete with a budget of
$25 million, which is not much in the aviation world now but was a great
deal then. The first of the three aircraft types which the BPC selected
that year was an advanced trainer, the North American NA-49. By the time
the BPC placed their order more than 400 aircraft had already rolled off
the production line for the USAAC, as well as many for export. No major
problems were expected, therefore, when the first aircraft, serialled N7000,
arrived in England and was taken on charge at the Aeroplane & Armament
Experimental Establishment at Martlesham Heath on 3 December 1938 so that
a programme of testing could be carried out and Pilots' Notes prepared.
So began the long
life-story of the Harvard in British military service, a story which has
by no means ended yet. In 'The Harvard File' the Author has restricted
himself to dealing with the histories of the 4760 Harvards which carried
British military serial numbers.

successful outcome of the Pacific War and fought hard against the Communists
