Book
about the involvement of New Zealand Servicemen in the Fleet Air Arm 1940-45.
"I have to nominate one pilot from 809 Squadron capable of
being a carrier batsman. You are it." So began 'Cappy' Masters
war career, armed with two ping-pong bats. This book contains a wealth
of anecdotes he had collected as a serviceman during the war, some sad,
many happy, all conveyed with intelligence and feeling. This is a
first-hand account of the involvement of New Zealand servicemen in the
Fleet Air Arm during World War II. It is written with particular reference
to the "forgotton fleet", the British Pacific Fleet in the Indian Ocean.
"Cappy" Masters describes his training, his involvement in many theatres
of war and the friendships that were created during the war. Narrated with
humour, "Cappy" relates the exciting, amusing and even the boring times
of an involvement with the Royal Navy, via the Fleet Air Arm, where the
"Poms" and the "Kiwis" managed to get along pretty well and make an effective
contribution to the war effort.

This
little known story begins when the Free French Navy (FNFL) was created
on 1 July 1940. The French Fleet Air Arm (Aeronautique navale des FNFL),
which numbered only a few dozen in July 1940 had over 400 aviators in 1943.

employed in the fighter group, Ile de France in 1942 and onboard Royal
Navy aircraft carrirers in 1943. Following the North African invasion of
Morocco and Algeria, from 1943-1946 the UK opened training schools for
future French FAA pilots, mechanics, radio operators, etc. The book is
written in French but as the cover indicates "To hnour and please our English
speaking readers all picture captions are given in French and English").

BOOK CATEGORY: PRISONERS OF WAR
| Stalag
Luft III: The Secret Story. By Arthur A. Durand. Lousiana State Univ. Pr.
ISBN: 0807124435. |
 |
Stalag
Luft III was the POW camp made famous by the movie, The Great Escape, and
was "home" to captured Fleet Air Arm, Royal Air Force and other Commonwealth
and Allied airmen. Its history is ably recorded with full use of
the secret records kept by the prisoners, supplemented by interviews and
declassified documents, to recount the dramatic story of the British and
American aviators and their captivity. The book begins with several aviators'
captures, interrogations and transfers to the Stalag, and then shows the
POWs' ingenuity as they strive to maintain their physical and mental health
in adverse conditions. Camp commandant, Colonel Friedrich-Wilhelm von Lindeiner-Wildau,
during his twenty-one month administration of the camp there were 262 escape
attempts, 100 of them involving tunnels. The book concludes with a twenty-nine
page appendix that surveys the history of prisoners of war.
